A teacher who was marking this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, exams collapsed and died after falling ill at the marking centre. According to the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, the teacher suddenly fell ill at a marking centre in Nairobi and was rushed to PCEA Kikuyu Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Here is the press statement from KNEC, concerning the incident;
“It is with profound shock and regret that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) announces the death of Robert Kiua Muindi who passed on last night. He was an examiner with KNEC and a teacher at Tusunini Primary School, Kilungu Sub County, Makueni County. The Examiner suddenly fell ill at a marking centre in Nairobi and was rushed to PCEA Kikuyu Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Council has informed the next of kin of the deceased, and subsequently notified the Teachers Service Commission. The Council wishes to send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, relatives and the entire teaching fraternity for the loss of a dedicated professional in the education sector. The Council will offer the necessary support to the family during the burial arrangements.”
The teachers’ employer, TSC, has already sent a condolence note to the examiner’s family;
“The Teachers Service Commission condoles with the Family of teacher Robert Kiua Muindi of Tusinini Primary School. Robert, an examiner with KNEC passed away last night. May his soul rest in peace.”
This comes after two other teachers perished when they were involved in a road accident at Ravine on their way to Nairobi for marking; few days ago. The teachers; a deputy Head Teacher at Mukhuyu Primary school and Madam Mary Litunya of Webuye P.A.G, were en-route to Nairobi for the marking exercise of this year’s KCPE exams.

The marking exercise of the this year’s KCPE examination is ongoing at across to 11 marking centres designated by the Kenya National Examinations Council, knec. According to information from the Council over 7,000 examiners have been contracted to mark this year’s KCPE Insha and Composition papers. The other papers will be marked by the new optical mark recognition (OMR) marking machine acquired by Knec. These machines enable the Council to mark and release results in record time. Knec acting Chief Executive Officer Mercy Karogo had said the coordination and processing of KCPE Insha and Composition will take place between November 1 and 20. Last year the results were released on 19th of December. Marking of this year’s exams is expected to be complete by Friday.

Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha had hinted that the results will be made available; immediately after marking and processing. “These particular results will be released long before Christmas. Why do we have to keep them when they are ready? We prepare that before they go for Christmas, the children will know the schools they will be going to so that the parents can start preparing early,” Prof Magoha said at the last day of this year’s KCPE exams. This means, the 2019 KCPE results will be available before end of November.
