Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Migos Ogamba, has underscored the important role that technical and vocational education and training (TVET) play towards achieving Kenyaโ€™s vision 2030 actualisation.

He highlighted the success of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative, spearheaded by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), in bringing Kenyans with skills without certification into the ecosystem of skills qualification.

โ€œAs the government gears up to achieve Vision 2030, TVET plays a great role in spurring industrialisation in Kenya, which is a clear step to achieving Vision 2030,โ€ the CS said.

The government has implemented several key initiatives to strengthen the TVET sector, widen access to TVET, and improve the quality of programs in TVET institutions. To ensure relevance to evolving technological changes, the government has partnered with various industries in curriculum development, assessment, industrial practice, and continuous curriculum reviewing.

The government has developed over 400 competency-based curricula in close consultation with industry experts to ensure every skill taught in TVET institutions is directly applicable to real-world job roles. In July/August 2024, 59,575 candidates were assessed across 252 TVET assessment centres in Kenya, with 2,929 units of competency.

The government is committed to ensuring that CBET continues to evolve and remain relevant to drive the economic transformation of Kenya. โ€œGoing forward, the government is committed to ensuring that CBET continues to evolve and remain relevant in order to drive the economic transformation of Kenya,โ€ noted the education CS.

As CBET gains momentum, rigorous quality assurance mechanisms are established to maintain consistency and high standards in TVET training programs.

In line with Kenyaโ€™s commitment to sustainable development, TVET has integrated green skills and environmental awareness into its curricula to prepare youth for future jobs and responsible approaches across all industries.

Collaboration with development partners such as GIZ, ILO, CICAN, Mastercard Foundation, and the World Bank has strengthened Competency-Based Education and Training implementation in Kenya, positioning the country as a leader in the field.
