Five Kenyan students will represent Kenya at the 65th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), a World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School Students held annually in the United Kingdom.
ย
They include Cynthia Kathomi Mworia from Kenya High, Master Gilbert Ongoro from Alliance High School, and Tony Rotich Odhiambo from Light Academy, Nairobi.
Other participants include Nairobi School`s Alfred Githui Muriu and Lenny Muriungi Mutuma from Oloolaiser High School in Kajiado County, respectively.
ย
They were selected from a pool of 8,000 students who successfully participated in the 2023 and 2024 Kenya Mathematics Olympiad (KMO) contests.
Master Tony Rotich will also proceed to the prestigious MIT for undergraduate studies on full scholarship.
ย
The contest will offer Kenyan participants the rare opportunity to interact with some of the world’s ace mathematicians, raising their profiles for future career advancement and potentially being an advantage for those aiming to join Ivy League universities such as Harvard.
ย
The students commended CEMASTEA and partners for the initiative, saying it will help build the morale and capacity of students in mathematics. At least 112 countries have registered their participation in the contest.
ย
The annual competition is tailored to improve performance and promote excellence in mathematics among high school students in Kenya.
The goal is to create a group of critical thinkers who can apply classroom knowledge when solving real-life problems.
ย
The competition has boosted students’ ability to solve mathematical problems using critical thinking.
ย
The Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) is an annual prestigious event of the African Mathematics Union (AMU) organised each year since 1987, where the best pupils in secondary education are invited to compete.
