The Ministry of Education has developed draft guidelines for the placement of Grade 9 students into pathways when they transition to Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, said students will be assessed through the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) in Grade 9 next year and placed in one of three pathways: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports.

โ€œWe are now preparing for the final transition within the Basic Education framework from Grade 9 to Grade 10. This is a critical time to start discussing how we are going to manage that transition and deal with the Senior Schools,โ€ he stated.

โ€œWe are putting ourselves in perspective, and in preparation, we have already done draft guidelines on management of Senior Schools. Once the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams are done, we shall have consultations with the heads of school as our critical stakeholders so that we can go through these guidelines and firm them up in preparation for Grade 10,โ€ added Dr. Kipsang, emphasising the critical role of secondary school heads in this transition.
