The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Migori branch has strongly opposed a directive by the Ministry of Education demanding retooling contributions from schoolsโ€™ budgets.

Led by KUPPET Executive Secretary Jasolo Orwa of the Migori branch, they claimed that it was unfair to burden schools with funding a government-led retooling programme.

The union has called on school heads to resist pressure from Sub-County Education Directors demanding contributions toward the retooling training.

Orwa expressed concerns over the demand that schools pay Sh350 per teacher per day for a five-day retooling exercise meant to prepare educators for the incoming 2026 cohort of senior secondary school students.

โ€œThis is a government programme, and funding for retooling has always been sent by the national government. School principals should not be coerced into financing this programme, especially when already capitation funds have been overstretched,โ€ Orwa lamented.

Retooling is a key training initiative aimed at equipping teachers with new skills aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

While Orwa insists that Migori teachers are willing to undergo the training, he made it clear that teachers would not attend unless the government fully caters for the costs.

โ€œIf the Ministry of Education does not have money right now, they should wait until they do. It is not an emergency. But no principal should release even a shilling,โ€ he said.

KUPPET Treasurer- Migori branch Florence Auma added that it was not the work of school heads to fund the projects of the government.

Auma also asked the Ministry of Education to provide teachers with meals during the training and paid allowances as per government policy and directive.
