Starting next month, Junior Secondary Schools will begin receiving Grade 9 textbooks as part of a nationwide initiative. The distribution is set to run from October 1, 2023, to January 31, 2025, covering over 20,000 schools identified to host Junior Secondary Schools.

This effort is part of the government’s plan to supply more than 9.6 million textbooks to public primary schools, ensuring that all learners from Grade 1 to Grade 9 have access to the necessary instructional materials by next year.

The government aims to achieve a 1:1 pupil-textbook ratio, making Kenya the first country in East Africa to implement this policy.

All Grade 9 learners will receive textbooks for examinable subjects, prepared by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and printed by various approved publishers.
Public schools will receive these textbooks for free, while private schools will procure them from local bookshops.

Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Basic Education, emphasized the importance of these resources for effective teaching and learning.

He also announced a significant investment to convert over 46,000 intern teachers into permanent positions.

The PS disclosed that once the current intern teachers are confirmed, the State plans to hire an additional 20,000 new intern teachers so as to bring the number of teachers in the JSS ecosystem to 76,000.
