2024 KSSSA National Term One Games: Butula Boys Rugby Fifteens Team News, Fixtures and Results

Team Profile: Butula Boys’ Rugby 15’s Team.

Butula Boys’ star is fast rising in Rugby. The Western based Libondo Shimenga charges are on a good run in form; losing just a single match; so far, this year.

In the 2023 KSSSA National Term one Games (held at Eldoret) Butula Boys emerged winners after downing hapless All Saints 38-00 at the finals.

In their quest for glory, Butula were lined up alongside Rift Valley’s St. Anthony Kitale, Kwale High School (Coast Region) and Nyanza’s representative, Kisii School.

The boys would then represent Kenya at the 2023 East Africa School games, FEASSSA, held in Huye city of Rwanda.

They arrived in Huye with one aim, to clinch the FEASSSA title, only to fall short of their expectations as they couldn’t get past eventual winners; St. Mary’s College Kisubi of Uganda.

In the 2024 Busia County championship, Butula easily cruised past their opponents and stormed into the Western region’s term one games.

In the Western region championship, Butula faced off with Chavakali High, Kimobo and Koyonzo boys in pool B.

At the 2024 Western Region Secondary Schools’ Term one Games, Butula Boys emerged champs in Rugby Fifteens; after outsmarting bitter rivals Koyonzo Boys in the final clash at Nyang’ori Boys.

Butula Boys scored two unconverted tries while Koyonzo Boys only managed to score one Penalty. They had earlier lost to Koyonzo 8-11 at the preliminaries.

Their Coach Shimenga Libondo is optimistic that they will successfully defend their National title. Popularly known as ‘Shims’, Libondo is the gentleman behind Butula’s recent successes in Rugby.

Mr Shimenga first coached Chavakali high school for years as he taught Geography. He made Chavakali a rugby powerhouse producing talents that have played in Kenya rugby seven’s and 15s.

In 2009 Mr Shimenga moved to St Peters Boys Mumias and brought up the rugby club which was dead and in 2012 St Peters Mumias won the 15’s national title and went ahead and won other titles in the coming years.

Now in Butula Boys Mr Shimenga has already made the school a rugby powerhouse. With his many years of experience Mr Shimenga has in coaching rugby Butula boys have won the KSSSA 2023 national title.

In Machakos Butula have been placed in pool A alongside Eastern Region Champions All Saints, Saint Patrick’s Iten (Rift Valley Region) and Nyanza’s Champions Kisii School.
