229,292 Teachers Retooled Ahead of Grade 10 Roll Out

At least 229,292 teachers have been trained in the Competency-Based Education ahead of the roll out of senior secondary school next year.

Speaking during the National Dialogue on Education Quality and Learning Outcomes in Kericho County in March, the Director of Education, Ministry of Education, Mr John Ongosi , said the teachers were drawn from both public and private schools.

Mr Ongosi said 60,642 junior secondary school teachers and 1,200 teacher training college tutors had undergone the retooling to ensure the successful implementation of the curriculum.

He said the capacity building exercise equipped the teachers with relevant skills and knowledge to make sure the transition of learners from junior to senior school was seamless.
Mr Ongosi reiterated that the new curriculum mandated all teachers to be technology savvy.

He also assured stakeholders that the Ministry of Education is also planning to construct 1,600 laboratories in senior schools to support practical learning.

Earlier this year, Teachers Service Commission Chief Executive Nancy Macharia said that 20,000 junior school intern teachers will be retooled to boost delivery of the curriculum and mitigate the staffing shortage in schools.

Dr Macharia further announced the use of blended learning to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
“By the end of this year, the Commission will have trained 1,000 teachers in live streaming lessons. We must therefore encourage our teachers to embrace technology and ICT integration in curriculum delivery,” she said.

Stakeholders at the event were assured that the Ministry had unveiled comprehensive guidelines for the placement of Grade 10 learners in schools.
He added that the learners will specialise in one of three pathways that include arts and sports science, social sciences, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

During the forum, which was conducted in different counties, stakeholders were updated on the status of Competency-Based Education implementation and appraised on teacher recruitment and capacity building.
They also had the opportunity to validate Senior School guidelines.
