AGC Tenwek Hospital- History, Location & Medical Services
Located in Silibwet, just 5 km from Bomet town, AGC Tenwek Hospital is one of Kenya’s largest and most renowned healthcare facilities.
Established in 1937 by missionaries, it gained fame in 2008 as the first rural hospital outside Nairobi to perform open-heart surgeries.
With a mission to meet the growing demand for cardiovascular care, Tenwek recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic Centre.
The facility aims to address urgent cardiac treatment needs across Bomet County and beyond, with 50% of corrective heart surgeries in Kenya performed here annually.
The new centre, officially opened by President Dr. William Ruto, features advanced technologies, including six operating theatres, 52 ICU beds, and a dedicated post-anaesthesia care unit.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director-General of Health, remarked, “Tenwek Hospital is a pioneer in open-heart surgeries, having operated on over 2,000 cases since 2008. This new centre will significantly increase the volume of major heart and chest surgeries in Kenya.”
Dr. Russ White, the Centre’s Director and Chief Cardiologist, highlighted the pressing demand, noting that approximately 850 patients are currently waiting for surgery.
As cardiovascular diseases rise in Kenya, the new facility aligns with the government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care.
AGC Tenwek Hospital continues to be a leader in cardiac surgery, providing life-saving treatments and hope to many.
