Agriculture Centre of Excellency developed by Mount Kenya University

Mount Kenya University (MKU), Nakuru campus has been unveiled as a centre of excellence for Animal Health, Agriculture and Education science, hence a big boost to the national pursuit of food security.

MKU Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi said with the status, the campus is now better equipped to train professionals, who will lead the country’s agriculture sector in future.

Addressing stakeholders in Thika town Wednesday, the VC said the campus received the best training and research equipment to support training in agriculture, animal health and production and education science programme.

He said it has also resulted in an increase in student enrollment, programmes as well as academic and research resources.

“The university Senate has also approved Master of Science in Crop Protection and Photo-Sanitary Science, and the Diploma in Animal Health and Production (upgrading). Also approved is a revised curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Animal Health,” Prof. Jaganyi said.

The campus is the latest to acquire centre of excellence status after the Thika main campus that excels in medical and human health, the Nairobi campus in business and graduate studies, the Parklands Law campus in legal training, while the Mombasa campus deals with maritime studies and the blue economy.

The VC also said the university has acquired multi-million shillings’ worth of state-of-the-art research equipment that has positioned the institution as one of the best and most well-equipped academic and research institutions in East Africa.

He said they are working on a framework to have members of the public interact with their equipment.

“The University has embarked on the revision of its research policy in an effort to include newly developed guidelines for access to research equipment by members of the public,” said the VC.
