The Government has reiterated that the forthcoming national examinations will go on as scheduled.
State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr Julius Jwan made the remarks at Simotwet Secondary School in Eldama Ravine during the commissioning of Baringo’s first Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) classroom on Monday.
Jwan said that the government is aware of the insecurity situation affecting parts of Baringo and assured that the matter is being addressed by the security team adding that once they are ready with the modalities they will give proper directions.
Dr Jwan was referring to the insecurity situation in the Kerio Valley that has lately seen armed bandits attack even schools in the area.
The PS further said that the CBC implementation was at an advanced stage and that it was proceeding normally.
He also commended the Koibatek Sub-County CBC infrastructure implementation committee led by the Deputy County Commissioner for delivering the first CBC classroom in the County.
Dr Jwan said that there was confusion in the public regarding CBC which he said is a conceptual framework of teaching and learning.
“Some people confuse CBC with 8-4-4 system; 8-4-4 is a structure of learning the same way we have 2-6-3-3, but we cannot compare the structure with a conceptual framework of teaching and learning, which is a methodology of teaching,” Dr Jwan said.
He said the government was happy with the progress made in the implementation of the curriculum.
Dr Jwan said more resources should be channeled to the day schools which he says caters for about 75 per cent of secondary school learners in the country.
“It is in our interest to empower the same schools to have enough infrastructure and as you have seen with the way we are implementing the CBC, we don’t discriminate on the big and small schools,” added the PS.
He added that the focus was to make sure that the day schools that take up to 75 per cent of learners are well endowed so that learners get what they deserve in any other school.
Dr Jwan encouraged the learners that will be sitting their national exams in a fortnight to be upbeat even though the academic calendar was disrupted by Covid-19 pandemic.
“The government is aware of that and we will ensure everyone gets a share of what they deserve,” he said.
The function was also attended by the Rift Valley Regional Director of Education Jared Obiero, Eldama Ravine Deputy County Commissioner Omar Ali among other Sub-County heads of departments.
