Approved Grade 10 Textbooks List {Official MoE List}

The Ministry of Education (MoE), through the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), has released a list of approved textbooks and other curriculum support materials for Senior Schools’ Grade 10 learners.

The document, published on Tuesday, December 23, shows all learning resources approved for use in senior schools, marking a huge step in the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE).

Grade 10 Senior Schools Learning areas

In the senior school, learners will take seven learning areas comprising four core subjects, including:

1. English,
2. Kiswahili,
3. Core Mathematics and
4. Community Service Learning (CSL).

Learners will then be allowed to select three other subjects based on their career aspirations, abilities, interests, and aptitude, guided by their teachers.

It is important to note that under CBE, the career pathways are:

1. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics),
2. Social Sciences, and
3. Arts and Sports Science.

Approved textbooks and Curriculum Support Materials for Grade 10

Arts and Sports Science Pathway

For those taking Music and Dance, they will be required to have:

1. Hummingbird Music and Dance,
2. Mentor Music and Dance,
3. KLB Excellent Music and Dance,
4. Moran Music and Dance and
5. Distinction Music and Dance.

Theatre and Film Materials for Grade 10

Theatre and Film are required to acquire Doritex Film and Theatre and Distinction Theatre and Film, while those taking Hummingbird Fine Arts should have Front Row Fine Arts and Mentor Fine Arts.

Grade 10 Sports Sciences Pathway Resources

Those pursuing Sports Science must have Mountain Sports Science, Top Sports and Recreation and Booklyst Master Sports and Recreation.

Social Sciences Pathway Materials at Grade 10

Learners taking English under this pathway are required to have:

1. English Moran,
2. KLB Excellent English,
3. Storymoja English,
4. Hummingbird English,
5. Oxford English and
6. Highland English.

Kiswahili Learners’ resources for Grade 10

For Kiswahili, students should have:

1. Moran Kiswahili Cha Mwanafunzi,
2. Oxford Kiswahili Fasaha,
3. Mentor Kiswahili Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi,
4. Longhorn Chemchemi za Kiswahili,
5. One Planet Mbiu ya Kiswahili and
6. Hummingbird Kiswahili Kitabu cha Mwanafunzi.

History Learners’ Resources for Grade 10

Students taking History under this category must have:

1. Oxford Evolving World History,
2. Magical History and
3. the Citizenship Learner’s book.

Geography Learners’ Resources for Grade 10

Equally, for students seeking to do Geography must posses:

1. the Oxford Active Geography Learner’s Book,
2. Longhorn Comprehensive Geography and
3. KLB Excelling Geography.

Grade 10 Business Studies’ Textbooks

Those doing Business Studies are required to purchase:

1. Mentor Business Studies,
2. Oxford Active Business Studies,
3. Spotlight Business Studies and
4. Master Business Studies.

STEM Pathway Resources for Grade 10

Students undertaking computer studies under this category must posses:

1. the Modern Technology Computer Studies book and
2. Oxford Active Computer Studies.

Mathematics Learners’ Requirements

For learners taking mathematics, they will be required to acquire:

1. Mentor Mathematics,
2. Spotlight Core Mathematics,
3. Longhorn Advancing in Core Mathematics,
4. KLB Excellent Core Mathematics,
5. Mentor General Mathematics and
6. Spotlight Essential Mathematics.

Biology Materials for Grade 10

Under Biology, learners are required to acquire:

1. Spotlight Biology,
2. Triumph Biology,
3. Oxford Biology Today,
4. Magic Biology,
5. Master Biology or Mentor Biology.

Building and Construction Textbooks at Grade 10

Students seeking to do building and Construction are supposed to purchase:

1. the Master Building and Construction book,
2. Distinction Building and Construction and
3. Excellent Building and Construction.

Role of Teachers in Grade 10

A teacher in a senior school will be responsible for:

1. selecting learning materials only from the approved list,
2. using both learners’ books and teacher’s guides and
3. ensuring alignment with CBC teaching, learning, and assessment approaches.

Learning Outcomes for Senior Schools
According to the Ministry of Education.

By the end of senior school, the learner should be able to communicate effectively and utilise information and communication technology across varied contexts.

Similaly, the student must be able to apply mathematical, logical and critical thinking for problem solving and also apply basic research and scientific ability to manipulate the environment and solve problems.

By the end of senior school, a learner must also have the ability to exploit individual talents for leisure, self-fulfilment, career growth, further education and training.

Placement of learners at grade 10 is done by the Ministry of Education.
