CS Migos: Mathematics to Remain Mandatory Across All Senior School Pathways.

Nairobi — Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Migos has declared that Mathematics will continue to be a mandatory subject across all senior school pathways under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), following extensive consultations and input from stakeholders.

Speaking on Tuesday, CS Migos indicated that the majority of participants during the recent CBC dialogue supported the idea of making Mathematics a required subject, pointing to its essential role in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills across various fields.

“Most of the stakeholders during the CBC dialogue believed that Mathematics should be mandatory in senior school,” stated CS Migos. “We have heeded your concerns, consulted with KICD, and come to an agreement that some form of Mathematics be mandated for the other two pathways that are not STEM. ”

The CBC framework provides three senior school pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences; and Arts and Sports Science. Up to this point, Mathematics had mainly been prioritized in the STEM track.

This initiative is anticipated to standardize learning and ensure all students, regardless of their selected pathway, acquire crucial numeracy skills relevant to daily life and the modern job market.

Additional information regarding the implementation and curriculum design for the non-STEM pathways will be provided by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in due time.
