After Kenya gained independence in 1963, the government began expanding secondary education across the country, especially in rural areas where access to schools had been limited during the colonial period.
In Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County, there was growing demand for a secondary school to serve students from the Taita Hills and surrounding communities. It was during this post-independence education expansion period that Dr. Aggrey High School Wundanyi was established as a public secondary school to meet this need.
From its early beginnings, the school operated with very basic infrastructure. It started with a small number of classrooms, limited teaching materials, and few trained teachers.
Students came mainly from nearby villages, and learning conditions were challenging due to shortages of laboratories, desks, and textbooks. Despite these difficulties, the school played an important role in providing access to secondary education for the local community.
The school was named after James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey, a Ghanaian educator and missionary who greatly influenced African education. He strongly believed that education should be accessible to all people, including girls, and that it was the key to personal and national development. His ideas inspired many schools across Africa to adopt his name in recognition of his contribution to education.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the school gradually grew in size and structure. More permanent classrooms were constructed, replacing earlier temporary structures. The government posted more teachers to the school as part of efforts to strengthen rural education.
Enrollment increased steadily as more students completed primary school and sought secondary education opportunities. Although resources remained limited, the school continued to serve as one of the key learning institutions in the region.
In the 1990s, the school entered a phase of expansion and consolidation. New classrooms and facilities were added to accommodate the increasing student population. Science laboratories began to be developed, allowing students to conduct practical experiments in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

As a result, Dr. Aggrey High School Wundanyi expanded its infrastructure, including additional classrooms, improved laboratories, and better boarding facilities. The number of teachers increased, and academic organization became more structured, with greater focus on performance in national examinations.
From the 2010s to the present, the school has continued to modernize. Infrastructure has further improved, with expanded learning facilities and better-equipped laboratories.
Academic performance has remained a key focus, with departments working more closely to improve KCSE results. The school has also strengthened co-curricular activities such as sports, drama, and clubs, contributing to students’ overall development.
Today, it remains a significant public secondary school in Wundanyi, serving students from across Taita Taveta County and all parts of kenya in wide while continuing to uphold the educational ideals inspired by James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey.
