The Education Ministry has transitioned the education system from the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to Competency-Based Education (CBE).
Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok described CBE as “the best education system in the world,” highlighting its emphasis on developing students’ unique interests and skills.
During a thanksgiving event at Baringo High School in Eldama Ravine, Bitok noted that this new approach represents a major change from CBC, with the goal of cultivating a more capable and self-motivated generation.
“CBE is the best education system globally because it allows our youth to express their talents. We will implement our new system, KEMIS, to ensure a 100 percent transition from Junior School to Senior School,” Bitok stated.
He mentioned that they anticipate 1.2 million children will move from Junior School to Senior School, and preparations are in place to guarantee that all students have a spot in senior school.
However, his comments come amid increasing frustration among teachers and parents regarding the government’s lack of clear guidelines for choosing learning pathways, which is a crucial aspect of the new system.
This uncertainty has created anxiety in schools as 1.2 million students get ready to transition from Grade 9 to Grade 10.
In response, the Ministry of Education has gathered over 1,000 stakeholders to improve and oversee the implementation of CBE and has committed to hiring 24,000 new teachers this year to ensure the system is effectively supported and executed.
