Education Ministry to implement stricter audits after receiving a budget of Ksh702.7 billion.

The Education Ministry will implement stricter audits as it receives a budget of Ksh702.7 billion.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos announced that the government plans to enhance the school audit system to ensure responsible management of public funds in the education sector.

During the first National Retreat of Public Universities Councils in Mombasa, Migos disclosed that the Ministry of Education’s budget for the 2025/2026 fiscal year is Ksh702.7 billion, accounting for nearly 28% of the total Ksh4.239 trillion budget.

“We have already exceeded the UNESCO recommendation of allocating 20% of a nation’s budget to education. We will work within this budget to ensure that resources are used efficiently and effectively, minimizing waste to benefit the largest number of students,” Migos stated.

He stressed that any school leaders found misusing funds, as shown in audit reports, will be held accountable.

From this budget, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will receive Ksh387.2 billion, which includes Ksh7.2 billion for hiring 24,000 intern teachers in the first quarter of the financial year.

Additionally, Ksh5.9 billion is allocated for national examinations, while Ksh3 billion will support the School Feeding Programme. Free Primary Education will receive Ksh7 billion.

The CS assured that the school feeding budget will remain unchanged, ensuring that students in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) and informal settlements continue to receive meals to encourage school attendance and retention.

Migos also welcomed a recent High Court ruling that deemed extra charges imposed by schools as unlawful, reinforcing the government’s position.

“These charges, as we have previously stated, are illegal, and the court has affirmed our stance that no additional fees should be imposed by school administrators on parents, as we provide free education and funding to all institutions,” he cautioned.
