##🖊️Teachers Service Commission to hire 30,000 teachers in January

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will recruit only 30,000 teachers in January next year to bridge the staffing gap in public schools.

The remainder of the 116,000 promised by President William Ruto during the elections campaigns has been pushed forward due to “the economic situation”.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu made the announcement yesterday, adding that the hiring will be done progressively.

Mr Machogu, speaking at Kisii School, explained that the current economic situation could not allow the President’s promise to be fulfilled at once.

“We know that this coming year, we had promised 116, 000 teachers but because of the nature of the economy, the way it is, we are going to do it progressively. So this coming January, we are going to recruit 30, 000 teachers and thereafter, we will be able to improve,” Mr Machogu told principals from Kisii and Nyamira counties.

The Kenyan maize variety, DKC90-89, was planted on June 2 within JKUAT’s Modern Agriculture Demonstration Area (MADA) and yielded 50 per cent more harvest than those in surrounding farms.

“We have been doing research mainly on maize in the agricultural research farm here in JKUAT, focussing mainly on how to improve the yield per hectares of our main crop besides mitigating the climate change,” said lead researcher, Prof. David Mburu.

The researchers and scientists stated clearly that the Kenyan research crop maize variety, DKC90-89, is not genetically modified.

The improvement in yield was simply an outcome of optimized agronomic practices such as proper spacing, mulching, irrigation and effective pest control.

Registering 2,700 kilogrammes yield per acre in the demonstration area, the crop has shown potential to reverse maize shortage in Kenya and contribute to food security for the population.
