Mouth watering clashes are in the offing at the upcoming Eliud Owalo schools’ basketball championship to be held in Kisumu on 2nd and 3rd March this year.

The tournament will feature defending Regional champs Ototo Girls and Onjiko boys.

Other invited teams include: former boys’ champions Agoro Sare (Homa Bay) and Maseno School (Kisumu County).

Each County will be represented by two teams; save for the hosts Kisumu who have been awarded an extra slot.

The venue will be at Kisumu Sports Ground with several goodies up for grabs. This inaugural tournament is sponsored Eliud Owalo who is the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, Kenya in conjuction with the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Nyanza region.

Preceding the tournament is a training for basketball Coaches drawn from the larger Nyanza Region; that will happen at the same venue on Saturday 18th to Sunday 19th February.

Last month, Owalo donated basketball uniforms to both the Kenyatta University Men’s Basketball Team (The Pirates) and the Kenyatta University Ladies’ Basketball Team (Oryx).

The event, held at the Kenyatta University Basketball Court, was attended by Prof. Thorua, DVC Research, Innovation, and Outreach; Prof. Grace Mbunyi, Registrar Corporate Affairs; Dr. Gladys Mwangi, Deputy Executive Dean, School of Health Sciences; and the Kenyatta University Basketball Head Coach, Caleb Osewe.
He also participated in a basketball game with the teams, on the same court where I once played, during my university days as a member of the Pirates Basketball team and later served as the chairman of the Kenyatta University Basketball Clubs.
Owalo was accompanied to the event by Paul Otula, Chairman of the Kenya Basketball Federation, along with former National Team Basketball players Ronny Owino, Maurice Aluanga, Angela Luchivyia, Sylvia Kamau, and Abraham Muthogo.
Additionally, former Kenyatta University Pirates players Michael Riziki, Dickson Jawichre, Charles Birech, Tom Nyakiamo, and former Kenyatta University Oryx players Nellie Odera, Merab Gondi, and Rhoda Tsuma were also present.
