First Lady Advocates for Collective Efforts to Empower Girls
First Lady Rachel Ruto has emphasized the need for united efforts to help young girls reach their full potential.
Mrs. Ruto identified extreme poverty as a major barrier preventing girls from achieving their lifelong aspirations, as many are compelled to assist their families financially.
She stressed that every effort should be made to ensure that all girls have access to quality education and essential services that provide them with the skills necessary to transform their lives and contribute to national development.
The First Lady made these remarks during the World Thinking Day celebrations at the Nyeri Moi Complex, commemorating the 105th anniversary of the Kenya Girl Guides Association.
“Poverty continues to be a significant challenge limiting many girls’ access to education, healthcare, and essential services. This situation is exacerbated by climate change, which threatens the livelihoods of numerous communities and makes it difficult for girls to stay in school.
To achieve the government’s goal of 100% enrollment and retention, we must ensure that Kenya meets its target of providing food to 10 million children by 2030,” she stated.
The First Lady also urged educational institutions to support the Girl Guides Association in developing practical solutions to address challenges such as climate change and food insecurity.
Mrs. Ruto highlighted that with adequate training and support from organizations like the 4K Club, the movement could significantly impact their local communities through initiatives that would have lasting effects nationwide.
“As Girl Guides, we have the One Tree Campaign as our environmental flagship project. However, I encourage the Guides to increase their tree planting efforts from one tree to 30 trees each year, including fruit trees. Collaborate with the 4K Club to designate land for planting fruit trees to help combat food insecurity,” she concluded.
