Fury over Dilapidated Classrooms at Kerangi Primary School in Mbeere South Constituency

Parents, teachers, and Pupils at Kerangi Primary School in Mbeere South Constituency are raising their voices against the poor state of their classrooms.

With only two modern classrooms for Pre-Primary 1 and 2 provided by the County Government, the rest are mud structures that pose serious health risks to learners.

Students fear for their safety during the rainy season due to the risk of collapsing walls, while the lack of privacy in the dilapidated toilets adds to their discomfort. One student expressed, “I feel embarrassed to relieve myself in a toilet that does not offer privacy and dignity, while calling on authorities and well-wishers to remedy the situation.

A parent, Mary Mutindi, and a cook in the school said children regularly complain over respiratory complications as a result of dust pollution, especially during the dry season.

The school lacks a reliable water source, forcing learners to bring water from home for drinking and cooking.

Teachers are also struggling with inadequate facilities and teaching materials. Teacher Josphat Mutua highlighted the lack of a proper staffroom, making it difficult for educators to prepare effectively.

County Chief Officer in charge of ECDE Pits Nguru acknowledged the construction of the two classrooms but urged well-wishers to help improve the other facilities.

The community is calling on area MP Nebat Muriuki to prioritise funding for the school through NG-CDF.
