Government increases secondary school fees for 2024

Parents with children in boarding schools will be forced to dig deeper into their pockets to fund their children’s education after the government issued new fee guidelines for 2024 through the Ministry of Education to end the subsidized fee scheme introduced in 2021 school Calendar.

In the directive issued by the Head Secretary of the Department of Early Education and Basic Education, State Education Department; Parents who have children in national and extra county schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika and Eldoret will pay a total of Ksh 53,554 per year from Ksh 45,000 set in the year 2021.

Those whose children attend boarding schools and extra county schools located elsewhere will pay Ksh 40,535 per year, up from the current Ksh 35,000.

However, the government will subsidizes Ksh 22, 244 per student in both boarding and day schools.

This will cover training (tuition, study materials and exams) for which the government has provided Ksh 4,144; medical/insurance (Ksh 2000), activities (Ksh 1500) and mathematics and science improvement in secondary education (SMASSE) allocated Ksh 200.

Other included; travel and local transport, electricity and staff allowance Ksh 9,400; and maintenance and repair (Ksh 5000).

Parents with children in special needs schools pay Ksh 12,790 annually from January next year up from Ksh 10,860; the government pays a subsidy of Ksh 53,807 per student annually.

The subsidy is Ksh 19, 053 for internet and shops; and an additional grant of Ksh 12,510 to provide support equipment and additional staff as needed.

The Ministry announced that enrollment data that will be used to provide state subsidies to all public schools will be obtained from the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

The government previously subsidized the fees paid by parents in the 2021-2022 school calendar, saying the school calendar will only last 30 weeks instead of the usual 39 weeks.
