Helb responds to messages on new account creation

The Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, has moved to dispel fears of a possible hack attempt on its online portal. This comes after messages were circulated to select email accounts.

Here is the presser from HELB CEO, Mr. Charles Ringera.

‘RESPONSE ON HELB ONLINE PORTAL ACCOUNT CREATION EMAILS & SMS

It has come to our attention, today Saturday 3rd August, 2019, that there are messages that were allegedly released from the HELB portal to select emails and randomly generated mobile numbers mostly comprising non-HELB beneficiaries.

The message alert indicated that an account had been created on the HELB Online Portal. However, the link to activate the account was not active.

We wish to reassure the public as follows:
1. These messages did not originate from the Higher Education Loans Board database;
2. The HELB database is safe; and
3. The technology used at HELB is best in practice, complete with relevant security measures.

HELB remains committed with regards to data integrity and confidentiality.
Appropriate security of
personal data is paramount, including protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and against accidental loss, destruction or damage, using appropriate technical or organisational measures.

We have since communicated directly to members of the public who reached out and reassured them accordingly.’

About Higher Education Loans Board

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) is a state body established by an Act of Parliament CAP 213A in 1995 mandated to provide loans, bursaries and scholarships to Kenyans pursuing higher education in recognized Kenyan Universities and Colleges and to recover the same after completion of studies to facilitate establishment of a revolving fund.
The Board is therefore well aligned to Chapter 4, Section 43 (1) (f) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, that every person has the right to education.
