Here are the steps to quickly update your token meter

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has rolled out a free prepaid meter update before the August deadline.

KPLC’s campaign is dubbed Update Token Meter Yako.

“We have started a campaign to update the prepaid token meter software. You will be guided via SMS to start the update process,” KPLC stated in a short message sent to all customers.

KPLC explained that customers will receive two codes via SMS.

“The first code is the reset code, and the second code is the update code,” KPLC explained.

Once a customer receives an SMS to update their meters from Kenya Power, they will follow the two steps:

1). Key in code 1 to reset.

2). Key in code 2 to update.

Kenya Power has revealed that 7.4 million meters will be upgraded and warned that all prepaid meters not upgraded by the August deadline will not accept electricity tokens.

The update, which is free of charge, is crucial for customers to continue enjoying uninterrupted electricity services.

“A total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are targeted for this exercise. All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the tokens. Because of this, we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure that all our customers are fully assisted in updating their meters to continue to enjoy our services,” Kenya Power MD Joseph Siror said.

The electricity distributor said that all consumers in rural areas will have to transition to using smart meters in the long term.

The latest move by KPLC will see the utility company cut the huge losses incurred due to illegal connections and electricity theft.
