Ministry of Education and Interior Cabinet Secretaries (CS’s), Prof. George Magoha and Dr. Fred Matiang’i, have decried perpetual indiscipline among school going children and called for concerted effort to end the menace, which has led to burning and damaging of school properties worth millions of shillings.
Speaking at Egetonto Primary School in Tabaka Ward, South Mogirango Constituency in Kisii County, during handing over of new classrooms, the CSs concurred that there is need for sobriety among parents when dealing with the learners in a bid to mold them to useful members of the society in future.
Prof. Magoha who commissioned the five classrooms decried continued indiscipline in schools and reiterated his call for the reintroduction of caning in schools.
He condemned the recent spate of burning of schools and urged parents not to abscond their part of responsibility and burden of disciplining children on teachers.
“We are not bringing up children well and that’s why many are not able to handle stress thus resulting to killing each other besides destroying property,” he lamented. He lauded school heads for doing their best during the difficult period of Covid-19 pandemic.
Lauding Dr. Matiang’i for donating funds for the construction of class rooms, the Education CS said the government will add Sh2 million for the project.
On the national examinations, Magoha said the two sets of Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), were ready for administering and assured that the exams were set with considerations of the challenges brought about by the pandemic.
“The Ministry will ensure that whoever takes the government next year, will find school transition to secondary level ready awaiting for implementation,” he said.
He said some primary schools have many classrooms which will be assessed to find possibilities of accommodating the junior secondary learners.
Explaining plans to link-up with other leaders in constructing four more classrooms at a cost of Sh 4 million, Dr. Matiang’i appealed to other leaders and the whole society to sacrifice for the sake of learners and not to look upon the government to do everything by itself.
He appealed to various professionals to contribute to what CDF is giving, saying it will take concerted effort to meet the needs of the learners.
“We must have a conversation on parenting and how we can have discipline in schools,” he reiterated.
Others present were Health Principal Secretary (PS), Susan Mochache, ICT Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS), Maureen Mbaka, Kisii County Commissioner, Allan Machari and Dagoretti North Legislator, Simba Arati among others.
