Undergraduate HELB Loans
This loan is available for Students who are pursuing their Bachelor’s degrees in all the private and public universities in the East African Community (EAC).
For students to benefit from this loan facility, they must have been placed by the Kenya Universities and Central College Placement Service ( KUCCPS) as government sponsored, self sponsored or module II students.
The loan starts to attract a 4% interest immediately after one year after graduation.
Undergraduate students can apply for this loan in which the Board will approve your loan of up to a maximum of sh. 60,000 depending on the details you give during applications.
Students who are taking diploma, certificate, postgraduate and pre-university courses are not eligible yo apply for this loan.
Students will benefit from this loan up to a maximum number of years equivalent to the length of the course.
If a student is taking a 4 year course, he/she will benefit from the loan for 4 years and if for six years, then he/she will benefit for 6 years in a row.
When students are offered this loan, the loan is subjected to an administrative fee of Sh. 500 from the disbursed amount.
Once one has graduated, the Board gives an allowance of one year for the student before starting the repayment process or whenever the board deems it fit.
The undergraduate loans are divided into two types like;
- First time Application Loan
This loan is applied for students placed by the Kenya Universities Central Colleges placement Service (KUCCPS) when joining universities for the first semester.
2. Second and Subsequent loan
Here students are supposed to submit their applications for considerations after receiving the first loan.
When applying for this loan, it does not require the students to fill the forms and seek signing and stamps from relevant authorities like the first one.
How to apply for the first time
- Visit the HELB portal at http://www.helb.co.ke
- Click on CREATE an account to register.
- After creating an account, the log in and select the appropriate Fist time Loan Application Form product.
- Read the details given in the page or watch videos on Financial Literacy and participate in the brief exercise online.
- Access the form and fill in the application form.
- Print two copies of the duly filled Loan Form.
- Ensure the forms are signed and stamped by relevant authorities as indicated in the forms.
- Attach all the relevant documents as indicated in the checklist at the back of the form.
- Drop one copy of the duly filled, signed and stamped form in your nearest Huduma Centre or the HELB office at the anniversary Towers in Nairobi or through any nearest bank of choice.
How To Apply For Second and Subsequent Loan
- Download the HELB Application from the play store
- Open the app and input the details like First Name, phone number – make sure it is registered for M-Pesa, E-mail address, National ID and KRA PIN number. This is to generate your pin you will use in logging in to the app the check the box for license agreement.
- Read the mandatory financial literacy notes the briefly answer one question in the page.
- Scroll down the page and click ‘proceed’.
- Click on the loans tab and select undergraduate loans then select the undergraduate Subsequent loan.
- Fill the necessary details and then submit. You will receive a pop up message showing that your application was successful. You will also receive the serial number for your application.
Note: Ksh. 1 will be deducted from your M-pesa to validate your telephone number.
Those students who don’t have Safaricom lines are asked to apply from the portal then submit the application and download the form then send it to HELB Offices.
Requirements when’s Applying For a HELB Loan
- Applicant’s National ID Card
- Parents National ID/ Death certificate.
- Guarantors’ National ID
- Applicant’s admission letter
- KCSE result slip/certificate
- Applicant’s ATM/Bank card bearing account number. This is only for government sponsored students
- Applicant’s one colored passport size photograph.
- A copy of the applicant’s smart card from the institution admitted.
TVET HELB Loan
Students studying diplomas, certificates and higher diplomas in all the select university colleges, Polytechnics, public universities and all approved TVET colleges are eligible to apply for this loan and other bursaries.
This loan is not different from other HELB Loans as it also attracts a 4% interest with sh. 1,000 ledger fees per year.
How to apply for TVET HELB Loan
- Visit the HELB portal at http://www.helb.co.ke
- Click on CREATE an account to register.
- After creating an account, the log in and select the appropriate Fist time TVET Loan Application Form product.
- Read the details given in the page or watch videos on Financial Literacy and participate in the brief exercise online.
- Access the form and fill in the application form.
