How to Apply for the New Kazi Mtaani Program: Climate Works 2025

Kenya’s President William Ruto has breathed new life into the Kazi Mtaani initiative, aimed at providing employment opportunities for the nation’s youth. Originally launched in 2020 under President Uhuru Kenyatta, this program was designed to offer temporary jobs to young individuals in urban slums, helping them navigate the economic hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Madaraka Day, June 1, 2025, President Ruto announced the revival of Kazi Mtaani, emphasizing its mission to enhance the lives of Kenya’s youth and inspire hope for a brighter future. The refreshed initiative aims to engage 110,000 young people across 46 counties, with Nairobi currently excluded from participation. Those involved will undertake various tasks, such as cleaning urban areas, constructing minor roads, planting trees, and enhancing community living conditions.

The Ministry of Roads is backing this project with a substantial budget of Ksh. 5 billion, integrating it into the ClimateWorX initiative, which seeks to merge financial benefits with sustainable practices. In 2022, President Ruto had paused the program, believing that a policy focused on affordable housing would yield more sustainable job opportunities.

The reinstatement of Kazi Mtaani reflects the government’s commitment to tackling youth unemployment and boosting incomes for those in challenging environments. Additionally, the president has launched the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) program, set to collaborate with the World Bank over the next five years to create further employment avenues for young people.

The revival of Kazi Mtaani demonstrates the government’s recognition of the urgent need for effective and tangible solutions to support unemployed youth, providing them with work, enhancing their skills, and fostering community development simultaneously.
