The Kenya Power and Lighting Company, KPLC, has told Customers to update their prepaid token meters countrywide ahead of a global mandate to overhaul the token vending system.

The electricity distributor says the upgrade targets all prepaid meter devices that use the Standard Transfer Specification, a universal method designed to transfer tokens to prepaid meters.

The campaign dubbed ‘Updated Token Meter Yako’ targets 7.4 million prepaid meters.

Step by step guide on how to update your token meter

Customers will receive two codes via SMS from Kenya Power upon purchasing tokens:

Step 1: Enter the first code to RESET the meter

Step 2: Enter the second code to Update the meter

Customers will be required to first load the new token before following the steps outlined in the SMS sent to them by Kenya Power.

Upon the update, the meter will automatically start accepting new electricity tokens without having an impact on the customer’s existing electricity tariff.

Where the customer has not acquired tokens that can trigger the update, Kenya Power is set to directly send the codes to the user.

There is no aspect of extra charge to the customer upon the update procedure.

Those who will fail to have their meters updated by the deadline will be unable to load new tokens.

Kenya Power has been coming up with inventions to cut loses through illegal electricity connections and theft.
