How TSC Handled the 25,152 Promotions

In short: Machakos and Makueni Are Big Winners

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has promoted 25,252 teachers across the country for the 2024/2025 financial year, with Machakos and Makueni counties receiving many of these promotions.

According to TSC’s official data, both Machakos and Makueni had 668 promotions each, making them the second highest in the country after Meru County, which had 678. Kitui County also did well with 630 promotions, placing the Lower Eastern region among the top areas for promotions.

The promotions were based on job grades, from C2 to D5, with the most promotions happening in job group C4, followed by C3 and C5.

A senior education officer from Kitui said, “This is a big step for career growth. It’s not just a reward; it encourages better service.”

Here’s how many teachers were promoted in the region:

– Machakos: 668 (including 266 in C4 and 119 in C5)
– Makueni: 668 (with 266 in C4 and strong numbers in C3 and D2)
– Kitui: 630 (265 in C4, 122 in C5, and 90 in D1)

TSC explained that these promotions are meant to fill open positions and improve school leadership and teaching across the country. They stressed that promotions were based on merit and available positions, not political or regional favoritism.

However, some counties, especially in the northeast and coastal areas, received fewer promotions, with Wajir (341), Lamu (398), and Mandera (388) getting the least.

National Totals by Job Group:

– C4: 8,508 promotions
– C3: 4,971 promotions
– C5: 5,425 promotions

Teachers in the Lower Eastern region are happy about the news, saying these promotions will boost morale and productivity in classrooms that have struggled for a long time.

A deputy headteacher in Mbooni East said, “Finally, it feels like our hard work is being recognized.”

The promotions take effect immediately and come at a time when the education sector is under pressure to improve performance and accountability due to curriculum changes.
