Kenyenya Teachers’ Training College

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Established in May 2012, Kenyenya Teachers Training College replaced Kisii Teachers College, which was previously integrated into Egerton University and later became Kisii University. Sponsored by the Ministry of Education, specifically the State Department of Basic Education, the college’s main responsibility is to train teachers for primary schools, covering early childhood to senior primary levels.

It is located in Kenyenya Sub-County, Kisii County, Kenya, on a 50-acre parcel of land in Riokindo zone, providing ample space for training facilities and potential expansion. Led by Colonel John Oyunge as the founding Chairman and Mr. Peter Nyambane Okirigiti as Principal, the college effectively mobilized resources and collaborated with the local community, establishing a strong foundation based on a simple blueprint that form the basis of its current structure.

In 2012, the college welcomed its inaugural batch of students, who sat for their first Primary Teachers Examination (PTE) in July 2014. Recognizing the importance of aligning the country’s educational landscape with global competitiveness, as advocated by the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, and in line with Kenya Vision 2030’s social pillar, which emphasizes the provision of globally competitive quality education, training, and research, the college is strategically positioned to meet the nation’s educational needs.

Presently, the college has undergone significant transformation and has emerged as a leading institution in providing competency-based curriculum and training for secondary and primary schools teachers in the broader western Kenya region.

ACADEMIC HISTORY

The college has consistently demonstrated commendable progress, as evidenced by the positive growth observed in students’ end-of-term assessments and final external exams for KNEC. Over the past seven years, from 2014 onwards in our records, the college has maintained an impressive average mean score of 5.1 across seven consecutive examinations. This performance surpasses that of similar institutions, establishing us as champions who uphold exceptional standards.Furthermore, our tracer studies have revealed that our students have dispersed across various schools, receiving positive feedback. In fact, some of our former students have assumed leadership positions as head teachers in prestigious private academies in different regions.

We remain committed to upholding these high standards and will continue to do so in the future because it forms part of our core mandate.

How to Apply – Joining Instructions

Intake Programs

1. (DECTE Level)

For admission to this level, ensure that your KCSE mean grade is C Plain and above.

2. (ECDE Upgrade)

For admisssion to DECTE level, be an ECDE Certificate holder from KNEC and duly registered with the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC).

3. (DPTE Level)

Ensure that your KCSE mean grade is C Plain and above, with subject cluster score as outlined here:

Score of C (plain) in Maths, English, Kiswahili and any one science plus one humanity.

4. (PTE Upgrade)

For admission to DPTE level, be a PTE Certificate holder from KNEC and duly registered with the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC).
