WHY SECONDARY SPORTS ASSOCIATION MUST CONFRONT CHEATS IN SPORT

As we approach term two games, we should remain alive to the menace of age-cheating and fielding of ineligible players in group sport events such as soccer, volleyball, netball or even Rugby. A recent report allegedly noted that one school has been banned from term one games due to cheating.

Yet, honestly, they are not the only culprits; many schools nowdays present non-students, particularly during Regional games, because, in most cases, the officials don’t exercise due diligence.

A number of schools equally cleanse their records and prepare error-free documents for the players who obviously look over aged. When one questions, you will be scolded for discriminating against a player solely based on looks.

The elaborate scheme is often aided by lack of documents at the venues of the events because the Secretary is often the custodian of the documents.

It is obvious that the Ministry of Education should move with speed to capture all students in form one biometrically and create IEBC-like gadgets to identify eligible players. A google app may come in handy if it contains biometrics.

The gist of the matter is that we cannot confront the menace of cheating in sports if we don’t embrace innovative ways of identifying the players in our institutions.

Sports officials cannot afford to look the other way as age-cheating practices continue to flourish in our institutions.
