KSSSA National School Games: Asumbi Girls Basketball team confident of winning national title

The basketball team from Asumbi Girls School is feeling optimistic about their chances of winning this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national ball games. They secured a victory against Ng’iya Girls with a score of 47-40 during the Nyanza regional finals held at St Joseph’s Rapogi Boys.

The KSSSA national ball games are scheduled to take place from April 7, 2025, at Shanzu Teachers College in Mombasa County. Team captain Ryan Bahati expressed confidence in their ability to become champions this year, attributing their optimism to the rigorous training they have been undergoing.

This will be the first time the team represents the Nyanza region at the national basketball level. Bahati stated, “We believe we will win at the national games. We are working hard to fulfill our goal of representing Kenya in the East African ball games championships.”

The team is in pool B alongside Butere Girls, Kaya Girls, and MPESA Academy. Player Aphline Judith noted that their thorough preparation was key to their victory over Ng’iya Girls in the regional competition and assured their supporters of a win at the national level. “Asumbi is not to be underestimated; we are determined to win this year’s national basketball games,” Judith declared.

Coach Ephraim Ochieng’ mentioned that their performance has improved since winning at the Nyanza regional level. He noted that their confidence has increased following the victory and that they are addressing their weaknesses to outshine their competitors. “I am confident we will not let our fans down; we are well-prepared to face our opponents,” Ochieng said. He has been training the girls for the past two years.

The school’s Chief Principal, Linet Pino Sati, encouraged the girls to aim for the national trophy, assuring them of the school’s full support.
