KSSSA School Games: Nyakach Girls Dominates Kisumu County Championships, Secures 5 Gold Medals

Nyakach Girls excelled at the Kisumu County Secondary Schools Term Two ball games, winning five gold medals in various sports, while Onjiko High School continued their reign in boys’ 3×3 basketball by claiming the title for the third year in a row.

The final overall results, announced on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, by the county’s competitions secretary, George Osura, revealed that Nyakach triumphed in girls’ football, 3×3 basketball, rugby 7s, volleyball, and netball.

In girls’ football, Nyakach Girls, known as the Plateau Queens in Nyakach sub-county and throughout Kisumu County, defended their title by defeating Kudho Mixed Secondary 1-0. The decisive goal was scored by Joan Agola, leading the team to victory under head coach Crispine Odindo and securing a spot in the Nyanza Regional Secondary Schools ball games scheduled for July 8-12 in Kisumu City. Nyakach reached the final after a commanding 5-0 win over Ndiru Secondary in the semifinals.

Kudho had previously defeated Ahero Girls 2-0 in the other semifinal before narrowly losing to the Plateau Queens in the final match. Coach Odindo expressed confidence, stating, “Despite losing eight key players from last year’s squad, we still have a strong team. With God’s help, we aim to qualify for the East Africa schools girls’ football final.”

The players who left the team after last year’s East Africa Secondary Schools Games in Mbale, Uganda, include goalkeeper Mercy Akoth, defenders Irene Wandera, Aisha Akinyi, and Lorrine Akinyi; midfielders Christine Adhiambo, Morrine Eseri, and Mercelline Awino; and striker Swaumu Masunngo.

In girls’ 3×3 basketball, Nyakach Girls, coached by Kevin Otuoma, won gold by defeating St. Barnabas 18-6 in the final held at Kisumu Girls High School. They had previously dominated Koru 16-1 in the semifinals, while St. Barnabas narrowly beat Katolo Mixed 10-8 to reach the final.

Nyakach also secured gold in girls’ volleyball, winning decisively against Koru Girls 3-0 in the final, and added another gold in girls’ netball with a strong 59-33 victory over Ngere Kagoro.

In the girls’ rugby 7s final, also coached by Kevin Otuoma, Nyakach triumphed over a determined Sigoti Secondary 3-0 in post-match penalties after a 19-19 draw in regulation time and a goalless extra period.

In the boys’ events, Onjiko High School defeated Maseno School 21-5 in the 3×3 basketball final to win gold and maintain their title for a third consecutive year. They also claimed a second gold medal in boys’ volleyball after overpowering Obambo Secondary 3-0 at Kisumu Boys Sportsground.
