KSSSA TEAM COMPLETES FACILITY INSPECTION IN PREPARATION FOR SCHOOL GAMES IN KAKAMEGA
The Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) team has concluded its inspection of facilities in Kakamega County, holding a final meeting to assess the progress made during the inspection, identify any gaps, and develop strategies to address them ahead of the upcoming games.
The meeting, chaired by Mr. Jared Obiero, the Western Regional Director of Education, included detailed reports from Mr. David Ngugi, the KSSSA and FEASSSA Secretary General, who discussed the requirements and suggested venues for the games.
For the East African games, six soccer fields will be required. The proposed locations include Bukhungu Stadium, Mumias Sports Complex, Sigalagala National Polytechnic grounds, Kakamega High School (which has both indoor and outdoor pitches), Mukumu Boys, and the Approved School. Rugby Sevens will take place at the Bullring, which features two pitches. Volleyball and netball matches are set to be held at Kakamega High School and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, respectively. Basketball games will occur at the Police Canteen and St. Peter’s Mumias Boys’ High School, while hockey will be played at Mukumu Boys and Mukumu Girls. Handball matches will also be hosted at MMUST.
Racket sports like badminton and table tennis will take place at MMUST, while lawn tennis is scheduled for Kakamega Sports Club. Athletics events will be held at Mumias Sports Complex, and swimming will primarily occur at MMUST, with St. Peter’s Boys’ Boarding in Mumias as an alternative venue.
Preparations for the Term 2 National Games are also underway. In the primary and junior school categories, both boys and girls will compete in soccer, volleyball, netball, and 3×3 basketball, with all matches taking place at Musingu High School. Accommodation for participants will be provided at Musingu and Musoli Girls.
Secondary school students, including those with physical and mental disabilities, will participate in football, volleyball, handball, netball, footsole, scrabble, chess, and darts. Students with visual impairments will compete in goalball, footsole, showdown, volleyball, and football. Accommodation for both Term 2 and East African games will be available at Mukumu Girls for girls and Mukumu Boys for boys.
The FEASSSA team plans to conduct two more inspection visits to Kakamega starting in the first week of July, one for the Term 2 National Games and another for the FEASSSA games. Mr. Obiero urged all officials in the Western region to ensure that all designated venues are fully prepared before the next inspection.
The team also expressed their sincere gratitude to Governor Fernandes Barasa for agreeing to host the prestigious FEASSSA games and for the warm hospitality they received during their stay in Kakamega.
Other attendees included Mr. Kipchumba Maiyo, President of KSSSA; Mr. Wycliffe Omoto, Deputy Regional Director of Education Western; and Mr. Allan Wanga, County Principal Sports Officer, among other senior officials.
