KUCCPS Sparks Debate with Proposed Student Assessment Tests Before Placement
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has declared intentions to implement new assessment tests for students prior to their placement in tertiary institutions.
This initiative is designed to enhance course selection by aligning students’ strengths and interests with appropriate career pathways.
However, the proposal has elicited mixed reactions from both students and parents. Many individuals are questioning the timing and clarity of the new tests, as KUCCPS has not yet disclosed the specific format or when the assessments will commence.
Students, who are already under significant pressure from national examinations, express that the introduction of an additional test may exacerbate academic stress. “We’re already facing enough pressure with KCSE. Adding another test feels overwhelming,” remarked a Form Four student in Nairobi.
Parents have also voiced their concerns, questioning whether the tests will accurately reflect a child’s potential. “What kind of test will determine my child’s future? And who will design it? ” inquired Jane Auma, a parent from Kisumu.
Notwithstanding the ongoing debate, KUCCPS maintains that this initiative is intended to decrease course mismatch and drop-out rates in universities and colleges.
They contend that early career guidance is essential in ensuring that students pursue fields that correspond to their abilities and aspirations.
Nevertheless, in the absence of clear information regarding how the assessments will be administered, many remain doubtful. Questions concerning transparency, fairness, and implementation continue to linger.
As the dialogue progresses, KUCCPS has committed to further stakeholder consultations. However, at present, uncertainty prevails, and students and parents await definitive answers.
