KUPPET Accuses TSC of Unjust Teacher Promotions

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has charged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) with unfairly promoting newly hired teachers at the expense of veteran educators. During a statement made in Vihiga on Friday, March 21, KUPPET National Chairperson Omboko Milemba criticized the TSC for alleged favoritism in its promotion process.

Milemba pointed out that some teachers have remained in the same job grade for over seven years, while others with only six months of experience have received promotions.

“I urge the TSC to immediately stop all ongoing promotions, as they are not handling the process properly. They are selecting teachers who have only been in the profession for six months,” stated Milemba.

The Emuhaya MP also called for the retraining of secondary school teachers in preparation for the Grade 10 transition, highlighting the importance of fairness in professional advancement.

KUPPET has expressed similar concerns in the past. On January 30, KUPPET Secretary General Moses Nthurima accused the TSC of unevenly distributing promotion opportunities among counties and advocated for a pro-rata system to ensure fair treatment.

Budgetary limitations have long been cited as a reason for teachers’ stagnation in job groups, a situation that continues to create dissatisfaction among educators.
