History of Machakos Girls High School

Machakos Girls High School is a public girls’ boarding secondary school located in Machakos County, Kenya, near Machakos town in the Mumbuni area. The school traces its origins to 1915, when it was established as the Government African School, a boys’ primary school during the colonial period.

In 1946, the institution began admitting girls alongside boys, becoming a mixed school. This marked the first major change in its structure, as it started transitioning toward broader access to education for African learners in the region.

In 1950, the boys were transferred to a separate institution, which later became Machakos School (Boys). This separation led to the development of a dedicated girls’ section, which continued to grow independently.

During the 1950s, the school was reorganized into the Government African Girls Intermediate School, focusing mainly on girls’ education and preparing learners for higher levels of secondary education.

A major milestone came in 1959, when the school admitted its first Form One class consisting of 12 girls, officially marking its transition into a full secondary school for girls. In 1960, the institution was renamed Machakos Girls High School.

In the 1960s, the school expanded rapidly.

In 1965, a double-stream system was introduced in Form One

In 1968, it expanded further into a triple-streamed school covering Forms 1–4

In the 1970s, academic expansion continued.

In 1972, a Form Five Arts class was introduced under the then A-level system.

In the 1980s, the school strengthened its science education programs, especially after national curriculum reforms.

In 1984, science subjects and facilities were expanded.

In the 2000s, the school continued to grow in enrollment and infrastructure.

In 2007, a fourth stream was introduced in Form One due to increased demand for admission.

Over time, Machakos Girls High School developed into one of the leading extra-county girls’ boarding schools in Kenya, known for discipline, academic consistency, and strong participation in co-curricular activities.
