Massive Police Recruitment Announced, Government Unveils May 2025 Intake

The government has formally declared a large-scale recruitment initiative for the Kenya Prisons Service, scheduled to commence in May 2025 throughout all counties. Principal Secretary for Interior, Dr. Raymond Omollo, revealed the information in Nairobi during a stakeholder forum, confirming that the process will be entirely transparent and merit-based.

Dr. Omollo highlighted that this recruitment is intended to tackle a persistent shortage of officers within the correctional system—an issue that has affected operations in numerous prisons. With many existing officers nearing retirement, the necessity for new, qualified individuals has become critical.

Both men and women are invited to apply, as the government advocates for gender inclusivity. The recruitment will encompass various positions, such as warders and technical roles. Applicants are required to possess at least a KCSE certificate and to satisfy rigorous physical and academic criteria.

Candidates who are successful will participate in comprehensive paramilitary training at the Kenya Prisons Staff Training College located in Ruiru. Dr. Omollo cautioned the public against scams, emphasizing that the complete process will be cost-free and held in public locations under the supervision of Interior Ministry officials.

He also urged young individuals from underrepresented regions to apply, mentioning that regional equity will be taken into consideration during the selection process. This recruitment initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing prison services, including improved salaries, housing, and an emphasis on rehabilitation over punishment.
