Twelve additional Nursing students from Mount Kenya University (MKU) are set to begin apprenticeship opportunities in German hospitals, thanks to a collaboration between MKU and various institutions in Germany.

With this latest group, the total number of Nursing students from MKU participating in apprenticeships in German hospitals rises to 25. This follows the initial cohort of five students and a second group of eight.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, announced that the students will travel to Germany this Friday to start their apprenticeships at Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, their primary partner for these opportunities.

“All 12 students will depart this Friday and will arrive in Germany the next day, where they will be taken directly to Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences for their apprenticeship,” Prof. Jaganyi stated.

He emphasized that the students will gain invaluable experience in the global healthcare sector, providing them with unique opportunities to acquire practical skills and knowledge in various medical environments.

A key aspect of the program is the requirement for proficiency in the German language, supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), which has provided language instructors at the University to teach German.

Dr. Mercyline Kamande, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Research, indicated that the program will expand beyond Nursing to include Medical Technologists in radiology, thereby offering more opportunities to health sector professionals.

She also noted that an AI-enabled German Language Training Program will be implemented to improve learning efficiency, ensuring that even more students qualify for international apprenticeship programs.

“With these developments, we are well-positioned to strengthen our partnerships, ensuring that Kenyan students have access to a variety of rewarding career paths in Germany and beyond,” remarked the DVC.

Dr. Vincent Gaitho, the University’s Chairman of the Council, highlighted the importance of networking in today’s competitive environment.
