Moi university to fire several workers as financial woes deepen

Moi University is planning to lay off a number of staff due to financial challenges stemming from a decrease in student enrollment.

In a notice released on Wednesday, acting Vice Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut explained that the decision was prompted by a revenue shortfall, which has hindered the university’s ability to maintain operations and fulfill financial commitments, including paying staff salaries.

The notice stated, “In line with Section 40 of the Employment Act 2007, Laws of Kenya, and the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between Moi University and the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), we formally notify you of our intention to declare redundancy affecting several employees who are members of your Union.”

It highlighted that financial constraints have created a challenging environment for the university, making it difficult to meet its financial obligations, including employee compensation.

The university’s management indicated that discussions with the affected employees and their union representatives are ongoing, as required by law and the UASU CBA.

“To ensure the university’s sustainability, we must reassess our operations and adjust the workforce accordingly. During this notice period, we will consult with the affected employees and their Union representatives, in line with legal requirements and the UASU CBA,” the notice continued.

The university also mentioned that it is looking into alternatives to reduce the impact of the layoffs, such as possible redeployment or alternative positions, in accordance with the Employment Act, individual contracts, and the UASU CBA 2012/2013.

Recently, the institution has experienced disruptions in learning due to financial issues and a strike by lecturers.

The notice assured that affected employees would receive severance pay, salary in lieu of notice, payment for accrued leave days, and any other outstanding benefits, with all necessary deductions made according to statutory requirements.

The university will provide further details regarding the affected employees and the timeline for the redundancy process in due course.
