Marketable TSC Subject combinations: Every year, Universities and Colleges release thousands of graduate teachers to the job market. Much as there is high need for Teachers, the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, does not absorb all of them due to limited budget allocation.
Consequently, most teachers remain unemployed for many years.

Employment opportunities for graduate teachers.

Kenyan teachers have several employment opportunities. These include:
  1. Securing Permanent and Pensionable employment through TSC Recruitment. The Commission periodically advertises for Permanent TSC slots for teachers. There are 2 categories of such slots. The first one is advertisement of vacancies in schools as per the available staffing gaps. While, the second one is to replace teachers who have left service due to natural attrition, retirement or transfer of service.
  2. Employment on Internship terms: TSC employs teachers on contracts of 1 to 2 years. The good news is that, as much as these teachers wait for long they are eventually employed on permanent and Pensionable terms. The teachers receive a lower stipend than those employed on permanent and Pensionable terms.
  3. Employment on BoM terms: Here, the graduate teachers are directly employed by schools to mitigate staffing needs. Unfortunately, different schools pay varied monthly salaries for the teachers.
  4. Private  employment opportunities for teachers: Other teachers seek employment in private schools and the banking sector; with Equity and Kenya Commercial Bank being the highest employers.
  5. Greener pastures: A section of graduate teachers (both in TSC employment and Fresh Graduates) seek employment opportunities in foreign countries like Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Seychelles, China and America. The United States of America is the most preferred destination.
