MPs challenged to clarify their decision to dismiss the promotion of teachers

MPs challenged to clarify their decision to dismiss the promotion of teachers.

The National Assembly Education Committee has been tasked with explaining the reasons behind its decision to reject the recent promotion of over 25,000 teachers.

Led by Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga branch Secretary General Sabala Inyeni, KUPPET claims that the Education Committee is making biased decisions and overstepping its authority, thereby undermining the professional autonomy of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Inyeni further stated that the decision is illegal and harmful to the morale and career growth of teachers nationwide.

This follows less than a week after TSC CEO Nancy Mcharia faced scrutiny from lawmakers when she announced the promotion of 25,252 teachers across the country and submitted the recommendation to the Education Committee for consideration.

The lawmakers expressed concerns regarding the fairness of the selection criteria and the regional distribution of those who were promoted.

Nevertheless, KUPPET Vihiga officials accuse the MPs of leveraging the teachers’ recruitment and promotion process for political advantage ahead of upcoming elections.
