Nyamira County Donates 30 Acres of Land for the Construction of Mental Health Training Facility

In a significant boost to mental health training and services, the County Government of Nyamira has donated 30 acres of land to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) for the establishment of a dedicated Mental Health Training Facility.

The land, situated approximately 12 kilometers from Nyamira Town, will host a modern, state-of-the-art facility aimed at enhancing mental health education and care in the region.

While receiving a delegation from KMTC on Thursday, April 3, 2025, Governor Amos Nyaribo underscored the urgent need to scale up mental health interventions.

“The County Government of Nyamira is proud to donate this land. This initiative will not only address the increasing mental health challenges affecting our communities but also generate employment opportunities for KMTC-trained mental health professionals,” said Governor Nyaribo.

He reiterated the County Government’s commitment to fully implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with KMTC. This includes expanding KMTC Nyamira Campus to admit more students, improving tuition and administrative infrastructure, providing financial support to students through a revolving fund, and seconding teaching staff to support academic delivery.

Representing the KMTC Board Chairperson, Mr. Joseah K. Cheruiyot, Board Director Eng. Joseph Atonga expressed appreciation to the County Government for the generous donation and continued collaboration.

“We are grateful to the County Government of Nyamira for this meaningful contribution. It will go a long way in strengthening mental health training and broadening access to quality healthcare services,” said Eng. Atonga.

Other KMTC Board Directors present at the meeting included Mr. Benson Giuthua, Ms. Hardlyne Lusui, Mr. Paul Cheboi, and Ms. Eunice Karanja. Also in attendance were Dr. Leah Bii, Head of Intergovernmental Relations; Mr. Joseph Ahomo, Principal, Nairobi Campus; Ms. Alice Wagunda, Principal, Nyamira Campus; among other senior officers.
