Young educationists from Ndaragwa Constituency in Nyandarua County have urged parents to take care of their children over the long holidays to protect them from hazardous activities and vices in society.
Speaking during a mentorship programme at Muricho Primary School in Ndaragwa Central Ward in Ndaragwa Constituency, Grace Maina, the treasurer of the Nyandarua County Tertiary Students Association and a former student at the school, stated that there is a need for the community to be enlightened on the dangers that children might face during such long holidays if neglected.
Maina stated that she has been able to cover several schools as one of the younger leaders in the community, and the community has accepted her call for more alumni to do the same.
In order to accomplish this, she has committed to organizing a football competition that will attract hundreds of enthusiastic young players from all around the area. The programโs goal is to teach important life lessons through collaboration and mentoring in addition to improving football capabilities.
โFootball is more than just a game, it is a platform for teaching children about discipline, hard work, and the importance of giving back to the community. Our mentors are not only here to coach, theyโre here to inspire,โ said Maina
A resident, James Ngโangโa reiterated her views, stating that parents should be mindful of online safety and encourage children not to reveal personal information online. The young ones, he added should tell an adult if something makes them uncomfortable, especially since social media use is on the rise during holidays.
He continued that social vices like drug and substance abuse and sexual abuse are prevalent during holidays when kids are away from school and parents should not ignore any signs that their kids display.
Mrs Lucy Wanjiru, a parent from the area, reinforced the point stating that everyone in society must join the war against child abuse. โThis is only possible by raising awareness among communities,โ she stated.
The football tournament will be played on weekends, starting at 9 am. Participants will compete in matches throughout the day, and winning teams will receive assorted rewards.
