Parents demonstrate demanding immediate transfer of School Head

Learning was totally paralysed at Yago Primary School in Ndhiwa Sub-county after parents staged a demonstration to demand the transfer of the school head teacher.

A group of parents protested in the school on Monday to demand transfer of the head teacher, Elisha Gunga.

The parents blocked the school entrance to prevent Gunga from entering the school compound.

The parents led by the school’s Board of Management, BoM, Vice Chairman Richard Awino, accused the head teacher of mismanaging the school funds.

They said the mismanagement had led to the inability to construct a Grade Nine classroom. The parents also accused Gunga of failing to ensure smooth management of Junior Secondary School.

On Monday, student of Grade Nine had no classroom to sit.

Awino said funds from the Ministry of Education were disbursed to the school at the right time but the head teacher was an impediment to their utilisation in improvement of infrastructure.

He said he had also been denied crucial information on management of the school funds despite being an official of the BoM.

“We learnt that the school was receiving funds at the right time but the head teacher was an obstacle in their utilisation. This came later because some officials of the board were kept in the dark,” Awino said.

A BoM member James Apiyo, said the school classrooms of the school in were in poor conditions.

“Many learners wanted a new classroom and lockers which they can use to keep their books. But the learners were surprised not to find any improvement in the school,” Mr Apiyo said.

He accused the head teacher of failing to respond to complaints raised by parents and students.

The parents called for intervention of the Ministry of Education in the matter. They want the head teacher to be transferred from the school.
