Sixteen-year-old Ethan Githinji Gioko has been offered a full four-year education scholarship by Kingston College in Jamaica.
Gioko who departed for Jamaica over the weekend, managed to get the scholarship through the assistance of his athletics coach, Charles Kamau, who has been mentoring him in athletics after excelling in various athletics events and long-distance races.
According to a letter from the College’s Principal, Dave Myrie, the scholarship will facilitate his academic and athletic development, which include school fees/tuition, textbooks, medical monitoring, input, and oversight, boarding and meals.
The coach said Gioko who attended form one at Mbuyu Secondary School in Nyandarua, is a lucky boy, and prays that the scholarship will enhance his academic and sports skills. He is a third born in a family of seven children.
In a press statement to KNA, Sue Omanga, the Honorary Consul for Jamaica in Kenya, said the Kingston College program began on September 7, 2020, but due to Covid-19 conditions, Gioko and two other boys selected for the program were unable to process visas to Jamaica but attended other courses online.
She, however, noted that due to various personal circumstances the other two boys dropped off from the program.
Lauding Kingston College for offering the scholarship, Omanga said, “This is a true testimony of the growing relations between Kenya and Jamaica, and I hope to see more interactions on the trade, cultural and sports front.”
