In a rural village in Kirinyaga county is Mugwandi Secondary School, a learning institution that has made headlines after it emerged the institution has only one student and eight teachers assigned by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
According to reports, Mugwandi secondary risks closure after parents transferred all the other students and left only one Form Two student.
The young student, now has the entire complement of teachers at his service.
The student, is seen ringing the school bell, in a call to remind teachers it’s time to go and teach him.
He’s the headboy, the bell-ringer, the class prefect, the captain, probably also the noise maker, only he if he can speak to himself.
A Board of Management member disclosed that they were pleading with the former parents to bring back their children.
” The Board of Management (BOM) will meet to deliberate on the school’s future. There are proposals to repurpose the institution into a TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) centre or a teacher training college,” said a source from the BOM.
Parents in the school opted to transfer their children, following the Teachers commission prolonged delay to send a Principal to the institution.
The outcome of the BOM’s meeting will determine whether Mugwandi can reclaim its status as a vibrant educational institution or assume a new role that benefits the community.
