Secondary school students to get Sh22.2 million in Scholarships

The Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF) has this year dedicated Sh22.2 million to needy students pursuing their secondary school education.

The fund provided by the self-financing State Corporation shall not only be used to offer scholarships, but to also provide educational resources to needy students selected across the 47 counties.

Speaking at the JKF offices, Ministry of Education Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr. Sara Ruto congratulated the scholarship beneficiaries who were selected among 11,000 applicants for securing a place at the foundation.

“It is from the fruits of your hard work that you are here today. I hope you receive this award and this recognition that the society has bestowed on you with humility,” she said.

Ruto recognized the JKF for not only offering publication and scholarships to the needy students, but also for welcoming corporates and neighbours in public partnership to support secondary education.

She stated that 100 percent transition policy is being implemented despite the significant headwind that was caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is understandable when you say you are not able to give more scholarships to more students than the ones you have given today,” she said.

Chairman of the Board of Directors Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF) Mrs. Stella Samboja said that JKF is offering scholarships to 148 form one beneficiaries for the entire academic year.

“This is proof of our commitment to taking education to the most deprived and vulnerable members of the society. We believe strongly that education is the light of a nation,” Samboja said.

She added that although market dynamics have worked against their best and most acclaimed titles, JKF is committed to remain vibrant in the book industry.

“Like it was in the old syllabus, we have created our niche in this market by producing quality materials in all subjects. To this end, if there is one institution you can account for in making the CBC a success story, then JKF it is,” she said.

Samboja noted that 90 percent of JKF sponsored students who did the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) attained grades that would enable them to pursue higher education.

Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF) Managing Director Mr. David Mwaniki lauded the 104 boarding students and 44 day scholars who received the scholarship.

“These students are drawn from all the 47 counties and are competitively and transparently selected with regard to their marks, family background, level of need, affirmative action, gender and regional balancing,” Mwaniki said.

He commended Honda Motors, Intex Management Services, ABM Kenya Limited, Inchcape Kenya Limited and Color Twist Media Limited for input in partnering with JKF to support secondary school education.
