St. Mary’s Boys High School Lushangonyi’s Complete Details and Reviews

St. Mary’s Boys High School Lushangonyi’s Location

St. Mary’s Boys High School Lushangonyi, located in Lushangonyi in Taita Taveta County, was established in the 1960s, shortly after Kenya gained independence in 1963.

The school was founded at a time when there was a strong need to expand access to secondary education for African students, especially in rural areas like Taita.

The school was started by the Roman Catholic Church through the local Catholic Diocese. Its main aim was to provide young boys with formal education combined with strong Christian values, discipline, and moral guidance. Like many mission schools of that time, it emphasized both academic learning and character formation.

In its early years, the school began as a small institution with limited facilities. It had a small number of students, a few teachers, and basic infrastructure such as simple classrooms and temporary buildings. Most of the students came from the surrounding Taita community, as the school mainly served the local population.

During the 1970s, the school began to grow steadily. Enrollment increased as more families recognized the importance of secondary education. To accommodate this growth, the school expanded its infrastructure by building more classrooms and dormitories. It gradually developed into a boarding school, allowing it to admit students from other parts of Taita Taveta and neighboring regions.

In the 1980s and 1990s, St. Mary’s Lushangonyi continued to expand both academically and physically. More qualified teachers were employed, and facilities such as science laboratories and libraries were introduced.

The school also improved its performance in national examinations, becoming known locally for producing disciplined and hardworking students. The Catholic Church continued to play a central role in maintaining order, guiding leadership, and supporting development.

From the 2000s to the present, the school has continued to modernize and grow. It has adopted the current Kenyan education curriculum, improved its infrastructure, and strengthened its academic programs. The school also participates in sports and co-curricular activities, contributing to the all-round development of students.
