Teacher May Face Ten Years in Prison or Pay Sh5 Million Fine for Impersonating President Ruto

Titus Wekesa Sifuna, the Teacher, who May Face Ten Years in Prison or Pay Sh5 Million Fine for Impersonating President Ruto

A secondary school instructor could be sentenced to as much as ten years behind bars or face a penalty of Sh5 million after being charged with impersonating President William Ruto on social media.

The individual in question is identified as Titus Wekesa Sifuna; he reportedly created an account on X (formerly Twitter) using the President’s likeness and operated under the handle ‘I Must Go’ with the username @Thief_5th.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) alleges that Sifuna utilized the account to criticize and demean the Head of State and his family through multiple messages.

The material was deemed inflammatory, potentially inciting public unrest.

The posts are said to have created a stir within the online community, triggering national security concerns.

Authorities indicate that Sifuna’s actions are believed to be an offence as outlined in the Mukhyia of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018.

Section 23 of this legislation prohibits the intentional dissemination of false or misleading information that causes public disturbance or harms reputation.

If Sifuna is found guilty, he will be liable for a significant financial penalty in addition to a lengthy imprisonment term, or both.

Detectives noted that the suspect was identified through a mobile line that had been used for certain advertisements and was connected to the same social media account.

The line connected investigators via a digital trail that ultimately led to Sifuna’s arrest on April 18 in Bungoma County.

Further investigations also suggested a connection between an Umbrella Trex Solution company and the teacher.

Police additionally disclosed that the teacher spends a majority of his time in Kwale County, where it is claimed he volunteers, although he has not yet been located residing in that area.

This, they contended, renders him a potential flight risk.

The prosecution seeks to have Sifuna held for an additional seven days at Capitol Hill police station to carry on with inquiries. Police aim to examine his digital devices and request that X willingly provide logs of account activity.

A decision on the application for his extended detention is anticipated on Wednesday.

This situation has sparked renewed discussion regarding freedom of expression and the legality of online statements pertaining to public figures.
