Teremi Boys High School indefinitely shut down after students’ unrest

Teremi Boys High School has been indefinitely shut down after students stormed the principal’s residence on the night of Monday, January 20, causing extensive damage.

The unrest, reportedly sparked by dissatisfaction with academic performance, necessitated the intervention of anti-riot police.

Although the exact cause of the latest unrest remains unclear, preliminary reports suggest growing discontent with administrative decisions and poor academic outcomes may have fuelled the conflict.

Attempts to restore order failed, prompting the school administration to involve local authorities. After consultations, stakeholders decided to close the school to facilitate investigations and prevent further escalation.

When contacted, the school’s chief principal, Elphas Luvaso, briefly commented, alleging, “Thugs came at night to kill me,” without providing further details. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Last week, parents convened at the school to voice their concerns over the high number of students receiving grade Y in recent exams. Grade Y is assigned when an exam is disqualified due to cheating or when a student fails to meet the minimum standards, raising serious concerns about the school’s academic environment and standards.
